Reported by: Jeremy Stevens Wednesday, Feb 18, 2009 @09:27pm CST You've heard of trunk parties and Tupperware parties, but how about gold parties They're growing in popularity as gold becomes more valuable. In fact a recent market price for gold was $900 an ounce. Just four years ago it was less than $450 an ounce. At a local gold party in Springfield, Barbara Lee decided to see how the party worked. "I've got old broken chains that you never use. Earings, you know you've got one good gold one you've lost the old one." For some the party was a much needed purge. "Since I've had this ring I've lost my job and had a lot of things happen to me," said Trish Morris. "And I consulted with my other family members and they said get rid of it." At a gold party, people bring in their unwanted valuables and usually a jeweler tests each piece for quality and weight. The host then offers them a price to take it off their hands. "I just think that people are looking at new ways to make extra money and I believe that this is just a new solution to it," said party co-hostess Carole Caets. No doubt the slump in the economy is driving up the value of gold prompting more and more people to find creative ways of capitalizing on its value. "We're going to make people offers for their gold. They don't have to sell it to us," said party co-hostess Mia Davis. The party organizers say this is one of the most secure ways of cashing in your gold. "A lot of the jewelry stores won't buy just trash gold," said Davis. Guests of the gold party say the best part was they got a check for their valuables from a local bank, that same night. There are several local companies that offer gold parties. It's of course important to do some research on your own before selling off your jewelry, just so you have a general idea of its worth. |
