  • Students Taking Part in Out of this World Program

(Springfield, MO) -- Some local students are spending time learning from an astronaut not in the classroom, but in outer space.

An e-mail can be sent to any of your friends or colleagues, but some local students are sending their e-mails to outer space.

Rountree student Cordelia Tobin is getting ready to ask astronaut Dr. Sandra Magnus a question.  But Magnus isn't in the classroom or even in this world. She's in space.  It's through a program called Spacebook.

"It's basically a blog and it's different questions posted everyday from students," explains teacher Amy Hopkins.

Where young minds communicate and ask questions to astronauts living in the space station.

"What does fire look like in space?" asked student Malia Ross.

It's a program Hopkins is glad to have in her class.

"Right now, we are learning about matter, so they are thinking of good questions to ask her about that to enhance what we are learning in the classroom," Hopkins.

"I've asked her three questions, two about how you can control liquid in space, and the one that got on the blog is how do you use electricity in space," says Tobin.

Tobin wants to be a geologist when she grows up, but she is enjoying her adventure learning about space.

"Not everyone gets to go into space, so even talking to someone in space is as awesome as learning," says Tobin.

Next up for the 4th graders, they will be studying space this spring, so with the knowledge already learned through the Spacebook program they will be prepared.
